Wireless pH Monitoring (Bravo capsule)
If you suffer from acid reflux also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); or if you are wondering about the effectiveness of the preventative medications you are taking for acid reflux, wireless pH monitoring is a test that helps to evaluate your situation and identify the cause of various symptoms.
What is Wireless PH Monitoring?
Wireless pH Monitoring is a procedure where a wireless capsule (the size of a large vitamin) is placed inside your esophagus (food pipe) temporarily to monitor the pH within your esophagus. The capsule transmits pH information wirelessly to a receiver that your wear. The simple device monitors how frequent stomach contents are refluxing back into your esophagus.
The Process—What to Expect
An outpatient procedure, the process of placing the capsule in the esophagus, takes only a few minutes. Dr. Lotsu will insert a flexible, lighted tube into your mouth to look at your esophagus, stomach and the first portion of your small bowel. Next, he will attach the tiny Bravo capsule during your endoscopy inside of your esophagus.
We will give you a receiver that is small and will not restrict your daily activities and a journal for you to record details regarding your symptoms. Once the 48 or 96 hours of recording is over, you will return to our office with the receiver and a journal. We will upload all test data to a computer, analyze it, and promptly inform you of your results.
Important:
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the procedure.
- You will be sedated, so have a ride home arranged in advance.
- You should be able to return to your regular daily routine within 24 hours of the completion of the procedure.
Does the capsule hurt?
No, our patients feel no pain during the test. You may feel a sensation that something is in your esophagus, and you may feel the capsule when you eat and food passes it. We encourage you to chew food carefully and drink liquids to minimize any discomfort.
